Hungary Student Visa for Iraqi Students: Erbil Guide

Hungary student visa from Iraq: where to apply and what to prepare

If you plan to study in Hungary for more than 90 days, you need a long-stay D-type visa. For students living in Iraq, the route is not the one most people expect. This guide explains it using the Hungarian missions’ own published pages, and tells you what to get ready before you book.

Plan B Immigrations is a private service, not a government body. This page summarises public information published by Hungarian missions in Iraq (read October 2026). Rules and procedures change, so always follow the mission’s current published notice and checklist.

Where Iraqi students apply

  • The Embassy of Hungary in Baghdad does not handle visas. Its own page says it does not accept or process consular matters in any form.
  • Long-stay (D-type) visa applications for purposes other than family reunification, which includes study, are handled by the Consulate General of Hungary in Erbil. The Erbil consulate states that these applications continue to be handled exclusively by the Consulate General.
  • VFS Global handles short-stay (Schengen C) visas, and family-reunification D visas, in both Baghdad and Erbil. A study visa is a different category, so do not book it as a tourist or short-stay visa.

If you have a scholarship (Stipendium Hungaricum or similar)

  • The Erbil consulate says appointments for scholarship holders are arranged by email rather than through the normal online booking.
  • It asks scholarship holders to send their scholarship letter (Letter of Award, or Letter of Admission as another page words it) by email to the consulate. Use the contact address on the consulate’s own visa page.
  • Scholarship visas are D-type, like any study stay longer than 90 days. Several Hungarian missions state that Stipendium Hungaricum holders do not pay the visa fee.

Documents to prepare

The Erbil consulate publishes its own checklist for applicants, and that checklist is the one to follow. Across Hungarian missions, study visa applications typically ask for:

  1. University acceptance letter (and your scholarship award letter if you hold one).
  2. Passport valid well beyond your stay, with free pages, issued within the last 10 years.
  3. Completed and signed application form and recent passport photos.
  4. Proof of accommodation in Hungary, such as a dormitory confirmation or a tenancy agreement.
  5. Proof you can support yourself: a bank statement, a sponsor or parent declaration, or a scholarship certificate.
  6. Health insurance (a scholarship letter may cover this).

Documents from Iraq may need translation or attestation. Read the Erbil consulate’s checklist for exactly what it accepts.

Common problems that delay or refuse applications

  • Your name is spelled differently on your passport, acceptance letter and bank statement.
  • Proof of funds is not in your name and has no matching sponsor declaration.
  • Applying before you have the acceptance letter or award letter.
  • A passport with too few free pages, or issued more than 10 years ago.
  • Missing or inappropriate documents. Hungarian missions warn that this can lead to refusal.

After the visa

The D-type visa is a single-entry visa that lets you start your residence permit for study. After you arrive you have a limited time, typically 30 days according to Hungarian universities, to complete the residence permit steps. Extensions are done inside Hungary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a Hungary student visa at the embassy in Baghdad?
No. The Baghdad embassy states it does not handle consular matters. Study D-type visas are handled by the Consulate General in Erbil.

Is a Hungary student visa the same as a Schengen tourist visa?
No. Study for more than 90 days needs a D-type long-stay visa, which is a different application.

Do scholarship students pay a visa fee?
Several Hungarian missions state that Stipendium Hungaricum holders do not pay the visa fee. Check the Erbil consulate’s current notice.
